St. Lucia Central Reservations |
Game Reserves of the Area
|
St. Lucia is nestled right in
the heart of an area that is renowned for the number of game reserves,
either run by various conservation authorities, local communities, private
consortiums or individual owners. Since the establishment of the
original St. Lucia Game Reserve in 1895, the number of environmental
protection areas have increased drastically in this area. Similarly
the "Reserved Areas for Game" of Umfolozi and Hluhluwe were
initiated in 1895. The St. Lucia Park came into existence only in
1939 and consisted originally of the Lake St. Lucia with a
"half-mile" strip of land along the embankment.
False Bay Park on the north-western shores of Lake St. Lucia was established in 1954 and the Mkuze Game Reserve was linked to the existing park areas in 1992. The Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, consisting of the St. Lucia Park, St. Lucia Game Reserve, St. Lucia and Maputaland Marine Reserves, False Bay Park and the Mkuze Game Reserve came to fruition in 1992. Since 1995 the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park Authority has endeavoured to to unify all other conservancies in the area into the Park and has future visions of establishing a trans-frontier park with conservancies in the southern parts of both Swaziland and Mozambique.
