Sea turtles date back to the pre-historic ages and belong to the Reptile Age which preceded the Dinosaur Age. These magnificent docile creatures are facing many threats from mankind, yet all seven species remain, albeit in declining numbers world-wide. The Northern KwaZulu/Natal coastal beaches are, however, one of the few areas where the populations of Leatherback– & Loggerhead turtles are steadily increasing due to vigorous conservation and educational efforts by authorities, environmental volunteers and tour operators. Turtle sight-seeing tours are one of the major environmental education instruments in this effort. |
Only 1—2 hatchlings per 1000 will survive to maturity in order to sustain the existence of the specie.
Taking in consideration that the % survival per nest [ Leatherbacks +/- 1000 eggs and Loggerheads +/- 500 eggs ] is 2% or less, the conservation efforts to protect this life form is a critical priority.
